Horses are less vulnerable to trauma after silicon supplements are used, and healing improves with them. Silicon also raises the animal's defences by activating the immune system.
A randomised study of quarter horses compared a control group with three different levels of dietary silicon supplementation. The supplemented horses began their diets at six months of age and continued for eighteen months, training and racing period included. At the end of the study, those on the medium and high levels were significantly faster and covered greater training distances before their first breakdown; the highest level also raised bone mineral density in the third metacarpal.
A silicon deficiency causes bone and cartilage defects: collagen is reduced and calcification falls. Biologically active silicon makes up that shortfall, and wound healing improves with it.
